Early Papers with Stories

  1. Y.Fang, M.A. Cohen and T.G. Kincaid, "Dynamic analysis of a general class of Winner-Take-All competitive neural networks, IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks, vol.21, no.5, pp.771-783, May 2010. This paper was written back in 1996 while I was a postdoc. We submitted this paper to this journal that was reviewed during 1996-1997 time frame. Among four reviewers, three of them recommended it for publication, but one reviewer was adamant and insisted on not accepting this paper because my response might have caused his displeasure (he/she claimed that we did not understand the concept of stability while all stability concept we used had been used commonly in standard textbooks. It turned out that my response tried to turn his/her accusation around and accidentally hit him/her nerve). The final decision was a rejection. During a lazy winter break in Florida (2009), I suddenly remembered this paper, which may be still useful, and polished it and resubmitted it after so many years. This time it was accepted with just minor revision. Finally, this paper could see the daylight! (12/23/2015)
  2. Y. Fang, " A theorem on the k-adic representation of positive integers," Proceedings of the American Mathematical Society, Vol.130, No.6, 1619-1622, 2002. This paper was written back in 1984 when I was the first-year MS graduate student, working in the area of number theory. My adviser Professor Pin-zong Shao asked us to read the paper (reference [4]) and asked us what we could do further. Although I was a graduate student, I was still a fourth-year undergraduate student. I read the paper without much of understanding of the whole material, but I did see a formula in the reference [5] when I studied [5] before, that is the lemma in this paper. As it turned out, this was indeed the key idea which led to the proof with the improved result. It was submitted to Scientific Sinica, but was returned without any review. Then, it was submitted to American Mathematical Monthly, but was rejected with the reason that it was too technical. In 2001, during winter holiday break, I redid the translation and submitted to this journal, and it was accepted with minor revision. This paper finally saw the day light! (12/26/2015)
  3. Y. Fang, K.A. Loparo and X. Feng, "A sufficient condition for stability of a polytope of interval matrices," Systems and Control Letters, Vol. 23, No. 4, pp. 237-245, 1994. Fang's note about this paper: It is satisfying for a researcher to get the attention of other researchers on his work, even after leaving the field for many years! He, as a bookish researcher, will be thrilled to see his work inspire more further research, but will not appreciate any direct duplicate or any extension that contains almost surely zero mutual information, which called plagiarism in the publication community. I am attaching a paper by Ziad Zahreddine, published by Hindawi The International Journal of Mathematics and Mathematical Sciences. Let you be the judge! MYF (12/19/2013)
  4. Y. Fang, "The layered neural networks with Gaussian activations," never published. This paper was written when I just started my research on neural networks back in 1989-1990 when artifical neural networks research was hot and most commonly used activation functions were sigmoidal functions. The Gaussian activation function did not seem to appear then. I was inspired by the Gaussian density function approximation to the Dirac impulse function explained in Thomas Kailath's book Linear Systems and in this paper I offered the proof based on the Sampling Theorem I learned from Digital Systems. The paper was written using the now obsolete WP (WordPerfect) and I lost the original file. Fortunately, I found a hardcopy and this is the scanned copy. Ironically, the Radial based neural networks or the kernel based neural networks later developed do bear some similarity to what I proposed. This paper was written after I read quite a few papers on the universal approximation to nonlinear mapping by using artificial neural networks. (12/23/2015)
  5. Y. Fang, " The distribution of odd numbers in Hui Yang's (Pascal's) triangle," Journal of Qufu Normal University (Natural Sciences Edition), Vol. 14, No. 4, pp. 85-87, 1988. This is a paper written for fun and presents the result on fractal dimension in the Pascal triangle before I knew anything about the fractal geometry.
  6. Y. Fang, " More on the congruence problem for a class of exponential sum of powers," Journal of Qufu Normal University (Natural Sciences Edition), Vol. 13, No. 1, pp. 36-38, 1987. Although the more general case was done at the same time, which was cited in the above paper, unfortunately it was not accepted. Dr. Zun Shan discussed my result in his paper entitled "Notes on a Few Problems in Number Theory", and gave a short proof of my result. Here is the English version of the paper on the general result:"On Sum of Powers of Numbers Having a Given Order Modulo a Power of a Prime" I translated back in 2004 for possible publication. Here is the Chinese version for this paper". (noted 9/17/2012)
  7. Y. Fang,"On a limit problem," Journal of Qufu Teachers College (now Journal of Qufu Normal University)(Natural Sciences Edition), Vol. 11, No. 4, pp. 116-117, 1985. This is another paper done during my undergraduate years!
  8. Y. Fang, "Some inequalities on the trace of matrices," Hunan Mathematical Bulletin (Hunan Shu Xue Tong Xun), Vol. 2, pp. 26-27, 1984. This is my very first paper written when I was still a 3rd year undergraduate student.

Fang's note about this paper: It is satisfying for a reseacher to get the attention of other researchers on his work, even after leaving the field for many years! He, as a bookish researcher, will be thrilled to see his work inspire more further research, but will not appreciate any direct duplicate or any extension that contains almost surely zero mutual information, which called plagirarism in the publication community. I am attaching a paper by Ziad Zahreddine, published by Hindawi The International Journal of Mathematics and Mathematical Sciences. Let you be the judge! MYF (12/19/2013)
